Needing/Getting

Seriously loving this new video from OK Go;

And I seriously love this lyric;

"I've been waiting for months, waiting for years, waiting for you to change.
Aw, but there ain't much that's dumber, there ain't much that's dumber
than pinning your hopes on a change in another."

Hmmm... sums up things nicely I think.

Hmmmm.... shiny

I bought a new laptop... it's supposed to inspire me to write some fantastically witty posts (well its supposed to make writing easier if I don't have to hold in the charger to make the fucking thing work).

But in the week I've had it...*nothing*

Sigh.

But I did make an interesting choice not to transfer across my iTunes account to my shiny new laptop. Well I started to, but only 300 songs got transfered before I got sick of the old heap of shit turning off on me.

So that's left a little hole in my collection of close to 4000 songs.

Fuck.

So of the remaining people that actually might read this post... I need so suggestions to repopulate me decimated iTunes library.

So far I've gone a bit spastic with classic Smashing Pumpkins, found some great acoustic Lady Gaga and Boys Like Girls, reacquainted myself with some screaming System of a Down, and remembered how much I loved Machine Gun Fellatio at Uni.

You get the idea... I have a far reaching taste in music. So throw me some ideas of some great new, old or down right embarrassing music that I must get my hands on.

Extra points if you manage to avoid mentioning Mariah Carey/Whiteny Houston/Celine Dion (yes I looking at you Mr Skyhooker).

Got no friends. Got no lover.

I'm fucking loving this now song by Placebo - For What It's Worth. It's one of those songs that is made better by its video (Single Ladies by Beyonce is another).

Things I love about this clip....
  • Brian Molko is so bloody androgynous these days. He so looks like a 40 year old lesbian... and I suspect that's exactly what he wants to look like.
  • The drummer is so fucking hot (but he is the only straight one in the band. (Random fact all drummers are hot)
  • The labels on all the people - it's a bit reminiscent of "Stranger Than Fiction" with Will Ferrel, and I love it.
It's now on high rotation on my iPod... I love it muchly.

All I need is shoulder pads and a mullet

I'm the first to admit I'm a bit fussy with my music. If I don't like your choice of song, I'll gladly let you know that it makes me want to vomit.

So it was some shock that I learnt the radio station had been changed in my office while I had been working out of different campuses all last week. My favourite Nova was replaced with Triple M.

How very dare you!

But seeing as my boss had chosen the station and I'm trying to get another contract extension, I thought I'd give it a try. So these are the last 10 songs I have had to endure;

  1. Ice House - Electric Blue
  2. Pete Murray - some boring whiny crap that he released years ago
  3. AC/DC - the new heap of shit that happens to sound like every other song they've ever released
  4. The Knack - My Sharrona
  5. Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax
  6. Nickleback - The paddle pop lion spewing up some tripe again
  7. Rod Stewart - Maggie
  8. Cold Chisel - Kae Sahn
  9. Katy Perry - Hot and Cold
  10. Diesel - Crying Shame
That, ladies and gentleman, is the play list from a typical bogan wedding. They've chucked in Katy Perry to seem cutting edge, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood? Don't they realise it's a gay anthem and as such doesn't suit their demographic at all?

The damn DJ's are caught in a time warp too. All deep-voiced men that are probably sporting really bad moustaches, but have never heard of Movember, and waiting to announce an non-stop block of 80's rock.

Fuck the contract - as soon as the boss goes to lunch, I'm changing station.

So did you wash your hair before you appeared on TV?

The ARIAs - boring

Hamish and Andy - lame

Gabriella Cilmi - please wash your hair

The Veronicas - blonde doesn't suit the one on the right

Hamish and Andy - feeble

Sam Sparro - Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber?

Myf Warhurst - your boobs. Set them free.

The Living End - rocked big time

Hamish and Andy - why are these two so popular? Why?

Chris Lilley - target of my new mini crush

Presets - yay for winning, boo for selling your songs to advertisers

I'm starting a new diet today!

I'm starting to chunk up a bit. Since I've started seeing The Man, I've been drinking more, eating more crap food and exercising less. So with that combination of bad habits, I've put on a few kilo's over the past six weeks.

But I've discovered a new diet. The Crack Diet (tm). It has a fantastic success rate, and you simply shed the kilos. Lets look at some before and after shots of people who have had success on this diet phenomenon;

Before: Ms Amy Winehouse. Notice the curves? Notice the ample bosom? Notice the glow to her face and the distinct lack of bone visible beneath the skin? It's just not a healthy image to portray is it? But thankfully she went on The Crack Diet (tm).

After: See how much better Ms Winehouse looks? Her cheeks are now nice and sunken. Her arms look like they could be snapped simply picking up her crack pipe. I just love the way the upper part of her rib cage is visible through her skin. It's like its come out to say a cheeky "Hello boys! Aren't bones so much sexier than my former pert boobies?"

I also like how her hair has gone from a lovely shiny, clean look, to the unwashed beehive that looks like it could house several rats in it.

Soon as I find a dealer, I shall start The Crack Diet (tm) with gusto. Fingers crossed it's the diet solution for me.

Damn you vile woman...

I'm in a love/hate relationship with faux lesbo Pink. Some days I quite like her style and sassy attitude (yeah I said sass, get over it), but other days her music and her fucking "I'm a bad arse rock n roll babe so don't fuck with me attitude" shit me to tears.

Take the latest single "So What?" - it starts with an annoying "Na Na Na Na Na Na Na" (imagine kids in a school ground teasing the fat kid) and then she fits lyrics around that stupid sound. And the lyrics? Nothing but a contrived attempt at fooling us she's still a tough rock chick.

Take the first fucking verse;

I guess i just lost my husband
I don’t know where he went
So i’m gonna drink my money
I’m not gonna pay his rent (Nope)
I got a brand new attitude
And i’m gonna wear it tonight
I wanna get in trouble
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight

Ooohhhh... you're so tough Pink. Ooohhh... you're gonna go and get drunk. Ooohhh... you gonna get drunk and start a fight. Umm Maa. I'm gonna dob.
What a load of crap.

Sadly though, this song has grown on me and I have now downloaded it to the iPod. Illegally downloaded that is... fuck it if Pink is gonna get any of my money.

Say it isn't so...

My favourite Kiwi songsters are calling it quits. No, not Tim and Neil Finn - the Flight of the Conchords.

Mx news reports that after the pair finish filming the second series of the HBO TV Show (shown late night here on Channel Ten) they will go their separate ways.

Apparently Bret McKenzie (left) and Jemain Clemment are keen to break into other areas of the entertainment industry, including acting.

Clemment recently landed a lead role in the US production "Gentleman Broncos" and McKenzie had a few auditions for a role in "Justice League of America".

McKenzie is also keen to try script writing and further his song writing talents.

It'll be a sad, sad day when this duo breaks up. They have written some extremely funny songs, and are actually quite pleasant to look at on the TV screen.

I suppose it's always good to go out on a high.

It's just like when the Beatles broke up...

First Ricki-Lee took off, and then Jessica Mauboy ran away. Now news.com.au reports that Paulini has quit the Young Divas;

"A founding member of the Australian Idol spin-off sister act, Curuenavuli's exit follows in the footsteps of Ricki-Lee Coulter and more recently Jessica Mauboy, who also left the girl band to pursue solo careers"

So that leaves Kate "I tried Jenny Craig but they didn't tell me double quarter pounders weren't allowed" DeAraugo and Emily "I am the lizard queen" Williams, and the rumour there is that they're both about to be dropped and there will be a whole new line up. I predict the record company will just tell them to piss off.

I really hope the group doesn't fold. I mean, where else am I going to find unimaginative covers of old disco tracks that no one really wanted to hear all released on an album just before Christmas so every 15 year old girl with a dream to be on Idol will get one as a present? Where?

I suppose I'll just have to wait until Marcia Hines releases a new album.

I'm now gayer after seeing this...

I didn't think it was possible, but this pic has turned me gayer. Quick buy me a scarf and take me to see Mamma Mia STAT!!!!

It's nice that Madonna is keeping herself in shape now she's 85, but she is looking ridiculously hideous in that outfit/pose.

Eat some meat and get some fat on your skinny-arse frame.

RIP - Isaac Hayes

Another sad report from TV Tonight - Isaac Hayes has been found dead beside his home treadmill age 65.

Hayes first found fame in the '70's when he penned the hit "Theme from Shaft". Some say he was responsible for the disco boom.

Most people around my age and younger will better remember Hayes as the voice of "Chef" from "South Park" - the well-meaning, but over sexed ladies-lover, who often had a sexy song to help the boys out through a problem.

Hayes had a falling out with the creators of South Park when they started lampooning Scientology at every available opportunity.

I hate your guts...

Music news this morning that neo-psychedelia rock darlings, Wolfmother have a bit of a tiff and are breaking up.

News.com.au reports that bassist and keyboards player Chris Ross (right) is leaving the band because of ongoing clashes with curly-haired singer Andrew Stockdale (centre). An official statement from the band's management talks about "irreconcilable personal and musical differences" being the cause.

In other words Stockdale is a cunt, and Ross is over finding pube-like hairs all over the tour bus and on his tooth brush and in his cornflakes. That would make me spew too.

I never really liked the look of Stockdale. He wears too many scarves and is way too skinny. Plus people with hair that big and curly always looked suspicious to me. Possible puppy murders.

On the musical differences you know Stockdale probably wanted to use naked Flemish nuns slapping each other with smoked eels on the next album while Ross wanted to use the sounds of pygmy goats bleating while being milked by the Amish.

Musical creativity at its worst.

So Ross is off to form a new band, with the drummer Myles Heskitt (the hottest one of them all) and Stockdale is gonna look for new band mates and keep putting out records as Wolf Mother. He reminds of that kid at school that used to get shitty and take his cricket bat home and try to keep playing by himself because all the other kids thought he was a stupid cunt.

Daft Bodies... the gay version

When I was researching for my Pork and Beans post (yes I do research, sometimes) I came across a whole heap of viral videos that I had forgotten about.

The first one was Daft Hands - a fan video done to Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" with nothing but the words to the song all over her hands. Watch it here.

I really love Daft Punk - so mad that I missed getting to see them when they were in town. Fantastic sound and amazing stage show - and I loved Daft Hands. Simple concept done really well.

Then I found Daft Bodies - same concept, but with two chicks with boxes on their heads dancing to the song (it's much better than I describe it). Here's the link.

But the ultimate version is this one;

It is supremely gay... but two nicely toned boys in their jocks dancing to one of my favourite songs - how could I not post it.

My fave video right now...

Sometimes a crap song can be saved by a great film clip, and this is the case for the new Weezer song "Pork and Beans".

While it's a fairly forgettable song, the only reason I think I has got any air play is that the film clip rocks.

It's pretty much a homage to every internet viral video sensation over the past five or so years. You know - those little clips you get in your inbox that show some fat kid doing something in his bedroom (no, not that) or the guy that thinks he's a ninja and wants to impart his special skills on the world.

There are so many references in the clip, and I don't recognise many of them. But these are my favourites;

Chris Crocker - the "leave Brittney alone" guy
Caitlin Upton - the dumb-arse Miss Teen USA contestant who thinks a lack of maps is what's wrong with education in America
Daft Hands and Daft Bodies - two fan videos for daft Punks "Harder, faster, Stronger" where they had the works to the song written on their hands/bodies.
Will it Blend? - a guy that puts things in a blender and sees what happens. My favourite was the glow sticks.
Mentos and Diet Coke Eruptions - we all know that you put mentos in a soft drink and it pretty much explodes, well these look awesome in the back ground of the film clip.

There are lots more (god knows why K-Fed is in there though?), so check out the clip above. The song will grow on you, I guarantee it.

I just don't know what to think...

This one has got me confused. Sam Sparrow has been hailed as the "next big thing" in pop with the release of his little ditty "Black and Gold". Problem is, I hate that song so much. It makes me want to jam a screw driver in my ear every time I hear it.

But he's so damn cute.

Sparrow is an openly gay, ex-pat Aussie living in London now. After listening to several radio interviews, I'm even more intrigued. He's got that very proper Australian/Pommy accent happening and I just love accents.

This publicity shot is doing it for me too - he looks kinda like a young and well groomed Anthony Kiedis.

But then there's that stupid scarf he's got on (I hate scarves on men) and then the appearance on Rove where he wore the giant white rimmed glasses. He's playing up to the gay fashion extremes and the puts me off a little.

Hmmm... I wouldn't say no though.

I don't do Divas

Taste in music is a very personal thing. I'm sure people listen to my choice of music at parties and think "What the hell is this?". Especially when "Wannbe" by the Spice Girls pops up on the random play list (at least it's not the fucking Venga Boys, hey Kat?).

In recent months I've really gotten back into my high school play lists... loving Bush,Rage Against the Machine, Radio Head etc. The Classics. Pretty much anything loud and screamy that makes me want to work out harder at the gym. But then again I also like the Ministry of Sound mixes and anything with a good beat.

So your choice in music is your choice - I don't judge. Well most of the time.

The problem is I just don't seem to have a very "gay" taste in music. I just don't get how most of the gays seem to love their "Diva's", or pop princesses or just the freaking camp stuff that they play at the gay bars. Brittney, Celine, Kylie, Mariah etc etc etc. In fact it appalls me when I hear/read some of the favourites listed under music on people's profiles.

Case in point - I went on a blind date a few weeks ago, and it was all going along quite nicely. Good conversation about lots of different things. Work. Family. Leisure activities. Then we get to music. "So what's top on your iPod play lists?" I ask.

"Celine is getting the most play right now," (I'm sure beer came out my nose), "and Whitney gets up there a bit too."

I stumbled, paused and managed to recover. "Really? I'm more into Nine Inch Nails, Bush - a bit louder and faster."

The response - "Who?"

Needless to say, there was no second date.

Bush?

I'm going through a bit of a 90's Indie revival in my music tastes
at the moment. Loving Rage Against the Machine, Weezer, and especially Bush.

Just loving the gravely sound of lead singer Gavin Rossdale's voice, and the grunginess of the songs.

And to pique my interests in the band even further, I discover this photo of Mr Rossdale on towleroad this morning. Wow, who knew that he was that hot? Being Gwen Stefani's other half has certainly worked some magic on his ab's.

Gavin's got a solo album coming out - "Wanderlust". In Kat's words "a poppier sounding version of Bush", but in a anonymous reviewers words from iTunes "absolute crap".

I shall be eagerly waiting to hear what the single sounds like.

How in the name of everything that is holy did Mandy Kane get a record deal?

I went down to Subway at West End for lunch today, and was reading this weeks edition of "Time Off" magazine and found the best review of a single I have ever read.

Kudos to Chris Yates for the this master piece on the new Mandy Kane single - Far From Oblivion;

I remember being very confused as a young child. I would bore my poor mother senseless with unanswerable questions about the big issues of life. Is there a doggy heaven? Why are there so many starving people in the world? How come there are still countries fighting wars? Why did Optimus Prime have to die? And considering he's a robot why can't they just rebuild him?

Listening to Mandy Kane's new single "Far From Oblivion" sees me return to that child-like state of inquisitiveness. How in the name of everything that is holy did Mandy Kane get a record deal? Is there actually an audience for phony electro-rock devoid of hooks, substance or style? Is Mandy Kane surrounded by yes-men who tell him that he's awesome despite the glaringly obvious fact that he is not?

I asked all these same questions when Kane released his debut single some years ago entitled "Stab". Back then he was being styled as some kind of less-frightening Marilyn Manson, or more frightening Brain Moloko. A recent image change sees him with less make-up these days, but, alas, no more talent.

The lyrical approach for "Far From Oblivion" ranges from piling on as many tired rock 'n' roll-style cliches as possible, such as the embarrassing "I'm breaking the limits way out on the razor's edge/I promise myself I'm not stopping till I'm dead" to the down right ridiculous "The loners, and the stoners are wrapped up in diapers/The follow me and claim me as their p-p-p-p-pied piper".

WTF??!!

"Far from Oblivion" is a strong contender for the worst song I have ever been paid to listen to and I would gladly give the money back ten fold if it was possible to un-hear it.

Sorry, but some one had to say it.
